The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has encouraged the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to support a proposal from a wide range of governments, regarding the implementation dates for installing complex new ballast water treatment systems.
“If this pragmatic proposal is agreed, this would allow shipping companies to identify and invest in far more robust technology to the benefit of the marine environment” said ICS Secretary General, Peter Hinchliffe.
ICS identified that this IMO decision on dates will be taken by Marine Environment Protection Committee in the meeting during the first week of July. This date is also just 2 months before the entry into force of the IMO Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention on 8 September 2017. This decision will have major implications for approximately 40,000 existing ships.
